Jobs for August in the Garden

August is a great time to get yourself in the garden enjoying all the blooms, having family and friends round for barbecues and relaxing in the garden under the sunshine, but there are still jobs to do. These are quick and easy jobs that will make your garden looking great with minimal effort:

Job 1

Keep the lawn looking luscious and green by raking the old grass and water it well. Lawns always look better when they are neat and trim so lightly mow it every now and again with your garden lawn mower and remove any weeds that have been enjoying rapid growth due to the sun.

Job 2

If you like growing herbs in your kitchen garden cut back any herbs especially parsley, which is prone to bolting this time of year, as this will encourage a second flush. Now is also the time to start thinking and planting winter crops, such as cabbage and turnips.

Job 3

Remove any dead flower heads this will encourage better growth and prevent any spreading of diseases. Dead heads are also great to put on the compost heap/in the compost bin.  What’s more, save some time by pruning any hedges and shrubs whilst removing any dead heads.

 Job 4

As August seems to be the prime time to go on holiday arrange with a neighbour to water your plants when your away or alternatively move all your pots and containers in a shady and damp area of the garden and water well before you leave.

Following these simple and effective steps will make sure your garden is looking its best throughout the month and as they are quick and easy to do you will have more time to sit, relax and enjoy what you have created this summer.
