Mr McGregor: Preparing the Allotment for Winter Crops

As you all know I have been busy on the allotment harvesting and getting ready to get some new crops on the allotment. I was looking at the Notcutts Garden Library and I was over the moon when I saw that there is a guide on preparing the soil for winter crops and what’s more the best time to start doing this is now!

I have been so busy harvesting all my salad leaves, onion, tomatoes and radishes (to name a few) and got a little (too) excited about the new crops I need to buy, I have forgotten all about preparing the soilwith some garden lime soil conditioner. This is not a good start to the new season.

The Garden Library soil guide not only has jogged my memory, but it has also given me a few good tips that I will most certainly put into practice this week. The most important part of preparing the soil for winter crops is the cover crop; work them into the soil as much as you can, I have found that these give uncompromising results every time.

If you are new to ‘grow you own’ or haven’t grown crops over the winter months before this guide to preparing soil for winter crops is a must read.
